Evening Timelapse

Ive been experimenting quite a bit with timelapse photography lately.  I really liked how the city lights lit up the clouds on this one.

‘The Donna’ Cover Shoot

I had a great opportunity designing/shooting the cover for ‘The Donna’ Volume 1.  We shot the model over black & I shot the background elements from around my town.

June 13, 2010 - 5:09 pm Lala @ Lenz Love - What a spectacular demonstration of the Canon 5D and it's capabilities. This short but powerful video has even further deepened my love for cinematography and still photography. Thank you so much for sharing a different view into a very powerful photography tool!

The WOZ & I

So AWESOME.  I got to work with the Woz today!  Did some interviews on greenscreen, shot on my trusty 5DMark2.  The guy is a friggin legend.  I could not pass up him signing my MacBook!!

Gear…

I get asked all the time what gear I recommend when shooting video with DSLR’s.  So…I have posted this Amazon store with my suggestions to help you get started!

1D Mark4 DeNoise Test

Here is an ‘unscientific’ noise test with my Canon1DMark4.  I shot the timelapse at 3200ISO then ran the results through the NeatVideo deNoise filter.  I think it did a good job at saving what could be an unusable shot.  Click on the image to view the quicktime movie.

‘TIMP’

Shot in a day on Canon5Dmark2. Be warned….its SUPER epic;)

Im a real sucker for an interesting sky.  I just LOVE how they come to life in a timelapse.

I bring all the images into Shake & render to 108o ProRes HQ files from the terminal.  Shake flies when you render from the terminal.  I have found this method to be at least 4x faster than rendering from After Effects CS4.  I edit in Final Cut Pro.  All color correction is saved for last inside Color.

Flicker Free Timelapse

Everytime I have done a timelapse with my Canon 5Dmark2 I have experienced a very subtle flicker when i play the images back at 24fps.  Even with all the controls set to manual…aperture, shutter speed, iso…whitebalance.  The way I have gotten around the issue is to simply bypass the electronic aperture. After setting the aperture I slightly unscrew the lens from the camera body.  The results are 100% flicker free.

Here is a link to GB Deflicker (an After Effects plugin) that helps reduce timelapse flicker as well.

Run & Gun Solution

I shoot quite a bit of video on my 5D Mark2.  The biggest issue I had was figuring out a ‘run & gun’ solution where I could record audio & video at the same time.  The on-board audio on the 5dmark2 is crapporiffic at best. The solution; mount my Sennheiser wireless receiver to my 5D, then the kick butt Zoom H4n with Redhead windscreen to a  Zacuto Rapid Fire.  Problem solved.  I like this solution because My hands have instant access to the record buttons, as well as the zoom & the focus.  Essential for run & gun.

March 11, 2010 - 9:11 pm Takashi - Hi. I was looking for run and gun solution and end up here. Your set up looks great. I have 5dmkII,Zoom H4N,redhead,LCDVF and am considering now Zacto rapidfire for the same reason as you for portability and ergonomics. Could you tell me which is the extra part to allow to mount H4N on the rapidfire? Is there any economical solution or is it original Zacto part? I am going to mainly use the 24-105 f4IS. H4N at the position in your photo picks up a lot of camera handling noise and such? IS, hit record bottom etc...Thank you so much. Takashi Greeting from Lisbon, Portugal.

March 11, 2010 - 9:28 pm admin - There are 2 parts I had to buy (from Zacuto) to make this setup work. • Z-mount II for 15mm rods - $144 • ZUD 1/4 20 M - $44 THe 24-105 is a great lens for 'run&gun' Plenty of flexibility & the IS makes a HUGE difference in keeping a stable image. As far as noise is concerned...it can be an issue if you are not careful. I usually have the H4N set to record 4 channels- 2 on board and one of the other channels on a wireless Lav. Between that & the on-board I can usually find some usable audio. Good luck!

DSLR rig review

Over the past few months I have shot quite a few projects (both stills and video) on my 5DMark2.  Shooting video on the thing is a bit of a challenge & you can get into a lot of trouble if you dont know what you are doing.  One thing that is critical for shooting video on a DSLR is a rig that will support your gear.  Cinema 5D has posted a 25page review on various DSLR rigs that is fantastic.  Enjoy.

Las Vegas Video Shoot

Huge thanks to the City of North Las Vegas Mayor, Police Dept, Airforce, Thunderbirds,Fire Department, Nurses, Doctors, Judges, City Council…EVERYONE!  The shoot was fast and furious (3  1/2 hrs), but we got some fantastic shots. I did a rough cut last night & the video is looking very nice.  Thanks to all involved.  Also, thanks to Ruben Luevano for the shots below!

Everything was shot in the Canon 5D Mark 2 with the Redrock Micro MatteBox, Followfocus & Zacuto Z-Finder.  I have the 70-200mm mounted in the shots below.
